Computing at Hallwood Park Primary School

At Hallwood Park Primary School, we believe that computing equips pupils with the skills they need to navigate an increasingly digital world safely and responsibly. It enables pupils to create, communicate and solve problems using technology, while developing an understanding of how digital systems work.

A key priority is ensuring pupils become responsible digital citizens. Pupils are taught how to use technology safely, respectfully and thoughtfully, understanding both the opportunities and risks that come with being online.

Technology is used as a tool to enhance learning across the curriculum. Through our 1:1 iPad provision from Year 1 to Year 6, pupils learn how to use technology purposefully to support their learning in all subjects, including presenting ideas, creating content and accessing information.

Technology also plays an important role in supporting pupils with SEND. iPads are used to make learning more accessible, for example through recording responses using Seesaw instead of writing, or using tools such as Clicker to support pupils with specific learning needs. This ensures that all pupils can access the curriculum and demonstrate their understanding in a way that suits their needs.

In the Early Years, children do not use iPads. This is a deliberate decision to prioritise the development of communication, language, physical development and social interaction. These foundational skills are essential before introducing regular use of digital devices.

Key Stage 1

In Key Stage 1, pupils are introduced to the foundations of computing through a carefully sequenced curriculum.

They learn to:

  • understand what technology is and how it is used
  • use devices independently for simple tasks
  • create and present digital content
  • begin to understand algorithms and simple programming
  • understand basic online safety rules and know who to talk to if something concerns them

From the outset, pupils are taught that technology should be used safely and respectfully.

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2, pupils build on these foundations through a structured and progressive curriculum.

Learning is organised into three key areas:

  • computer science
  • information technology
  • digital literacy

Knowledge and Skills Development

Pupils develop:

Computer science

  • understanding algorithms and how they are used to create programs
  • designing, writing and debugging increasingly complex code
  • understanding how networks, the internet and search engines work

Information technology

  • creating high-quality digital content, including videos, presentations and podcasts
  • collecting, analysing and presenting data
  • selecting appropriate tools and software for different purposes

Digital literacy and online safety

  • understanding how to stay safe online and protect personal information
  • recognising risks such as misinformation, online influence and manipulation
  • understanding how online behaviour can impact themselves and others
  • developing respectful communication and positive online interactions
  • understanding how technology can affect health and wellbeing

As pupils progress, they move from following simple rules to making informed and responsible decisions about their use of technology.

Impact

Pupils leave Hallwood Park with:

  • confidence in using technology independently
  • a secure understanding of how digital systems work
  • the ability to create, evaluate and present digital content
  • the knowledge and judgement to stay safe and behave responsibly online
  • the skills needed to succeed in an increasingly digital world
