PE
At Hallwood Park Primary and Nursery School, we are committed to ensuring all children have access to high-quality physical education (PE) and a broad range of sporting opportunities. As part of the Halton Healthy Schools Programme, we recognise the importance of physical activity in developing well-rounded, healthy individuals. Our PE provision not only focuses on fitness but also on instilling life skills such as teamwork, resilience, and confidence.
The Importance of Being Physically Active
Physical activity plays a critical role in children's overall development. It promotes physical health, enhances mental well-being, supports learning, and helps build life skills like teamwork and problem-solving. At Hallwood Park, we encourage our students to engage in regular physical activity both in lessons and beyond, helping them to build habits that will last a lifetime.
PE Lessons and Curriculum
Children at Hallwood Park benefit from two hours of timetabled PE per week. In these lessons, they develop core skills that help them become well-rounded athletes. PE is taught by class teachers with support from a specialist PE teacher every Wednesday, ensuring high-quality delivery. Pupils are encouraged to showcase their learning to parents and carers, such as in end-of-term performances like dance shows.
The PE curriculum is designed to align with the National Curriculum, which includes:
Key Stage 1: Developing fundamental movement skills, balance, agility, and coordination. Children participate in simple team games, learn basic tactics, and perform dances using simple movements.
Key Stage 2: Pupils apply a broader range of skills, participate in competitive games, and develop flexibility, strength, and technique through athletics and gymnastics. They are encouraged to assess their own progress and strive for personal improvement.
Swimming and Water Safety
Swimming is a key part of our curriculum, with all children in Key Stage 2 receiving swimming instruction. By the end of Key Stage 2, we aim for all pupils to swim 25m confidently and to use a variety of strokes effectively. Students also learn water safety, including self-rescue techniques.
Active Playtimes and Play Leaders
At Hallwood Park, we understand the importance of active play. During break and lunch times, children have access to play equipment and are encouraged to stay active. Our trained Play Leaders in Year 5 and 6 help organise and lead activities for younger children, ensuring that playtimes are fun, active, and beneficial for all.
Competitive Sport
Throughout the year, pupils take part in intra-school competitions, allowing them to develop a competitive spirit in a supportive environment. We also participate in inter-school competitions, such as those organised through the Halton School Games Competition Calendar, offering students opportunities to represent the school and compete with other schools in the area.
After-School Clubs and Extra-Curricular Activities
We offer a wide range of after-school clubs to keep children active outside of the school day, including:
Football Club
Dance Club
Multi-Sports Club
Gymnastics Club
These clubs help children build skills, confidence, and foster a love for sport and physical activity.
Impact of PE and Sport Premium
Our Sport Premium funding is used to improve the quality of PE provision, support staff development, and expand opportunities for pupils. We have invested in new equipment, staff training, and additional extracurricular opportunities. We continue to monitor the impact of this funding, ensuring it benefits all children in the school.
